Bertha Mae (Bert) Harms, 90, died peacefully December 21, 2022.

Bert was born in her family’s farmhouse near Scotch Grove, Iowa on August 3, 1932. She was the daughter of William and Margaretha (Doden) Plueger. She was the youngest of 6 children.

She married Alvin (Bud) Harms on March 5, 1954.

Bert worked for a few years at John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, IA before working as a nurse for Drs. Myers, Caraway, Randolph and McDermott in Monticello for about 20 years. After the death of her husband on December 18, 1979, Bert moved to Iowa City and worked for Dr. Elmer Groben until his retirement. She finished her 55+ year career in the medical field working as a unit clerk in MedICU AT UIHC where she retired at age 78.

Bert was a member of Parkview Church in Iowa City. She loved the Lord and her family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include her children Tom (Annie) Harms of St. Petersburg, Florida; Barb (Mike) Recker of Iowa City, and bonus daughter Pam (Kendall) Stoneking Hanson of Turlock, CA; Grandchildren Cami (Joe) Fogg, Megan Recker, Caleb (Betsy) Recker, Jesse (Frankie) Harms, Abbie (Kevin) Lyons, Katie Mae (Pat) Barry and bonus grandson Charlie (Sydney) Rogers; Great-grandchildren include Lauren, Claire and Luke Recker and Quinn Lyons. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Junior Brodersen and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all of her siblings - Ervin Plueger, Ray Plueger, Luverne Plueger, Esther Siebels and Eloise Null.

Bert deeded her body to The University of Iowa and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Her family would like to thank Iowa City Hospice for their wonderful care of Bert and her family.
