Von Eugene Miller, 75, passed away December 20, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, with his wife Pamela by his side. During his battles with dementia and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, he remained strong and determined to be independent until the end.

Von was born April 15, 1947 in Washington, Iowa to Sylvanus and Eula Jean (Figgins) Miller. He grew up in Kalona graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in 1965. After graduation, Von moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa and started a career working for the U.S. Geological Survey which spanned 37 years. While living in Iowa City, Von met and married Pamela (Loney) in 1972 and raised their two kids, Jennifer (1977) and Jeremy (1982).

Following his retirement from USGS, Von worked part-time as a courier for Hills Bank, but really focused his passion for helping people while volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and serving 25 years as an adult leader on mission trips with the First United Methodist Church and the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), leading many housing projects for low-income families. Not to mention his dedication to blood donation and achieving a 16-gallon donor status.

Von is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pamela (Loney); his children: Jennifer Stilphen-Wildes of Iowa City, Iowa, Jeremy (Marcus) Johnson-Miller of Des Moines, Iowa; and three grandkids, Timothy, Jacob and Natalie. He is also survived by his siblings: Max (Carla) of Marrero, Louisiana, Tim (Krys) of Bonner Springs, Kansas and Hal (Kathy) of Honey Creek, Iowa, and his sister-in-law Linda (Les) Ackerman of Plano, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvanus (Chub) and Eula Jean (Figgins) Miller, sister-in-law, Nancy Loney of Iowa City, Iowa, and parents-in-law Bernard “Bud” and Agnes (Fitzpatrick) Loney.

Celebrating Von’s life, a service will be held Saturday January 7, 2023 at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church, 214 E. Jefferson Street, Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday January 6, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City after the service with a lunch to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Appalachia Service Project or Habitat for Humanity.
