John (Jack) Powell Rarick passed away December 28, 2022, from complications of a blood infection.

He was born July 18, 1939, in Iowa City to Allen A. Rarick and Ruth (Anthony) Rarick, delivered by his great uncle, Dr. Ernest Anthony. John graduated from Tiffin High School in 1957 and farmed in Johnson County since he was 16. He enjoyed showing Black Angus Cattle in 4H and raising cattle as a farmer. Also, he served in the Army National Guard.

John married Theola K. Colony on September 12, 1964. He was happy to be known as the lucky man who married that pretty blonde. John and Theola received the Heritage Farm Award from the Iowa Department of Agriculture in honor of 150 years of family ownership. He taught his children to be essential contributors to the family farm and take pride in their work. He was known for his big, distinctive laugh. When you heard it, you couldn’t help but laugh with him.

For many years John raised Australian Cattle Dogs that were prized by farmers and ranchers all over the US. As a semi-retired farmer, he built houses for Purple Martins and enjoyed listening to their Dawn Song in the morning.

John is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Theola; son, Clint P. Rarick (Rosemarie), and daughter, Kathryn K. Dorsey; her two children, John’s grandchildren, Dean P. Dorsey and Theola J. Dorsey and by his brother, Robert A. Rarick (Joyce).
