Susan Elaine Sandra, 74, passed away at her home peacefully from multiple myeloma on the morning of November 13, 2022.

Susan was born on February 1, 1948 in Kankakee, IL to William and Joan (Moody) Burton. She attended Catholic schools, and she was the first in her family to graduate from college. As a student at Loyola of Chicago she met her true love, Alexander Sandra. They were married on December 27, 1969. The couple lived in Washington D.C., Chicago, Shaker Heights, Ohio; and Baltimore while Alex finished his education. In August of 1978, they settled in Iowa City, IA to raise their family. Sue worked as a labor and delivery nurse, ending her career at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. While working, she earned a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Iowa.

Sue loved to do all kinds of craft projects. She liked to crochet (blankets and baptismal gowns), sew (Halloween costumes and bed quilts), cross stitch, knit (sweaters and hats) and even briefly made porcelain dolls. She loved to read romance and suspense novels. Sue and Alex enjoyed travelling the world with their dear friends, Alex and Mary Chorewycz. Sue loved to shop and spoil her grandchildren. She also loved animals and cared for many pets throughout her life.

Surviving Susan are her husband of 52 years, Alexander Sandra. Children Amy (Randy) Short of O’Fallon, IL, Joanna (Rodney) Short of Bettendorf, IA and David (Jennifer) of Madison, WI. She has six grandchildren: Kelly Short, Katherine Short, Calvin Short, Ryan Short, Evelyn Sandra and Claire Sandra. She is survived by her brother, Scott Burton of Thornton, CO, one niece, Alexandra Burton and many cousins. She also leaves behind Bailey the dog and Vinnie the cat.

Susan was proceeded in death by her parents, William and Joan Burton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Wednesday November 23, 2022 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3000 12th Avenue, Coralville, Iowa, with Father Chuck Adam officiating. Visitation will be held at the church before Mass at 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Private burial will be held at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the animal shelter of your choice.
