John E. O’Neill, 79, lifelong Johnson County resident, died Saturday, August 20, 2005
surrounded by his wife of 57 years & their five daughters at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Jeff Belger officiating.
Friends may call Wednesday from 3:00 – 8:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 3:00 pm and a parish vigil at 7:30pm.
Private burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to The Iowa City Catholic Community Foundation, in memory of John O’Neill, to benefit Regina or Pathways Adult Daycare.

John was born November 27, 1925 in Iowa City, the son of Edward & Catherine (Donohue) O’Neill.
He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School and married Jean Burger January 21, 1948 in Iowa City. Early in his career John farmed and then was elected to Johnson County Recorder, where he served the residents of Johnson County for 32 years. While County Recorder, John served on numerous state and national recorder positions. He retired in 1997.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City; Knights of Columbus Marquette Council
# 842, 4th degree, of which he was past Grand Knight, was past president of the St. Joseph Cemetery Committee and an avid Regina Booster Club member. John was club manager at the Knights of Columbus Hall for many years.

Survivors include his loving wife Jean of Iowa City;
five daughters, Kathleen O’Neill-Murphy & her husband Tim of St. Louis, Missouri, Susan Schneider & her husband Neil of Brewster, New York, Mary Gilroy & her husband John of Iowa City, Shawn Lynch & her husband Joe of Iowa City, Patrice Gee & her husband Mike of Omaha, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, Bradley, Katie, Justin, Joshua, Jacob, Jennifer, Michael, Ryan, Sean Patrick, Abbey, David and Katie Grace; sister, Cecelia Stratton & her husband Keith of Newton, Iowa, brothers, James O’Neill & his wife Sandra of Davenport and Vincent O’Neill & his wife Jane of Louisville, Kentucky, as well as many loved nieces & nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Patrick, sisters, Mary Catherine Kinney, Ellen Craig, Regina O’Neill, Anne O’Neill, and a beloved niece Katie O’Neill.
