Helen was born October 4, 1930, in Chicago, the daughter of Louis and Etta (Shulman) Tunik. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago in 1948. She then earned her Master of Arts and doctorate in Semitic Languages and History from Radcliffe College, finishing in 1956. She then had an AAUW Traveling Fellowship to Oxford University 1957-58.

She married Jonathan Goldstein February 1,1959, in Philadelphia. They spent the following year in Israel while Jonathan studied at the Hebrew University on a Fulbright, then moved to Iowa City in 1962, when he joined the History and Classics departments. Helen joined the faculty of the School of Religion in 1968, where she taught until she and Jonathan retired in 1995. She was the author of Averroes’ Questions in Physics as well as numerous scholarly articles.

Following their retirement, Helen and Jonathan fulfilled their dream of traveling the world, including a trip to Antarctica. Helen was a fine amateur pianist and a lover of classical music. She supported progressive and charitable causes and was an active participant in community affairs as long as her health allowed. She kept her intellectual curiosity and keen sense of humor until the end of her life.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Risė and Rachel (Stephen Lester), and her sister Joyce Pollack. Her husband Jonathan preceded her in death in 2004.
