Lois Jean Mahanna of Iowa City passed away October 24, 2022. She was 92 years old.

Jean’s family will receive guests at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service (2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City) on Friday, October 28 from 1-3 pm, concluding with a memorial service at 3 pm.

Jean was born August 4, 1930 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Edna (Gittins) Spurgeon. Jean was a woman who never met a stranger. She loved chocolate and used to say that she had a “chocolate alarm” to remind her to get some! She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and had a passion for sewing and quilting. The love Jean had for her family was tremendous and her passing leaves an emptiness. Her memory and legacy are carried on through all that love her.

Jean’s family include her children, Dan (Suzanne) Bell, Debbie (Jim) Carter, Bonnie Rodemeyer and Beckie (Tom) Stutzman; twelve grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; siblings, Phillip Spurgeon and Linda Parsons; special friend, Bud Beeler. Jean is preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Bell; second husband, Harold Mahanna; son, Michael; son-in-law, Ed Rodemeyer; siblings, Wally, Keith and Tom Spurgeon; sister, Ginger Headley; and her parents, Walter and Edna.

Jean’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the Solon Nursing Care Center for their exceptional care during Jean’s stay with them.

Please continue to keep Jean’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
