On Thursday, September 15th, 2022 Phil Cline passed away at 83.
Phillip Edward Cline was born on January 9th, 1939 in Iowa City, Iowa to Kenneth and Blanche (Kyle) Cline. He played the tight end position in football at City High in Iowa City, and he graduated from the University of Iowa in ROTC. Phil achieved the rank of Captain in the US Army Reserves. After running Cline Truck and Equipment in Iowa City, Phil went back to school and got his MA in Hospital Administration. He then held the title of Hospital Administrator in Nevada, Iowa, Dodgeville, Wisconsin, and last in Kodiak, Alaska.
Most people will remember Phil for often having a golden retriever by his side whether he was pheasant hunting, duck hunting, or ringing the bells for charity. He also developed a love for kayaking and sailing. He believed in giving back to his community as evidenced by his love for tutoring kids in Madison, Wisconsin, and for teaching at Illinois Central College. He also tutored adults who were working to earn their GED. Phil served on the school board and was a member of Rotary in Iowa City. He liked holding spelling sessions for his children at the dinner table whenever a spelling test was on the horizon, and never hesitated to correct their grammar.
The place Phil loved to spend his time the most was at the family cottage on Fish Hook Lake. The preservation of the lake for generations to come was a top concern of his, so in lieu of flowers, donations to the Fish Hook Lake & River Association (FHLRA) at PO Box 225, Park Rapids, MN 56470 would be appreciated.
Phil was preceded in death by both of his parents and his wife of 55 years, Mary Noel (Iber) Cline, as well as his sister, Sandra (Cline) Monroe. He is survived by his fiancée, Corinne Durkin, sisters Sally (Cline) Kimmerling, and Jane (Cline) Troup, his children Scott Cline, Amy (Cline) Davies, Alex Cline, and Paul Cline, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
A service to memorialize his life will be held on October 22, 2022 at Lensing Funeral Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, in Iowa City, Iowa at 2:00pm. Phil's family will then greet friends following the service from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
