Jan was born September 15, 1936 in Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph and Josie (McCabe) Scheetz. She was raised in Cosgrove, where she worked on the family farm, attended school, was a cheerleader, and met the love of her life in kindergarten. After graduation from Cosgrove High School in 1954, she married her love, Lawrence “Larry” Kinney on July 5, 1955 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove.

Following high school, Jan was employed by the University of Iowa Office of Student Housing. Jan then stayed home to care for her children until Mike started school. From 1967-1981 she worked for Drs. Hottel, Langhough and Veatch at Eye Associates. She then worked for pediatric dentists Dr. Harvey Poepsel and Dr. Bart Thompson.

After she and Larry retired in 1991, they enjoyed spending time with grandchildren, traveling the world, especially enjoying winters in Destin, Florida, and cheering on the Hawkeyes and the Cubs.

When Larry passed in 2012, Jan continued to enjoy watching sports, sharing meals and happy hours with her friends and family and attending daily mass. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, volunteering in many ways, including God’s Helping Hands, Perpetual Adoration Chapel, funeral luncheons, Eucharistic Minister, hosting dinners with the Bishop, and many other behind the scene activities.

Jan moved to the Legacy Senior Living Community in July 2021 and made many new friends at the Pointe and Gardens, along with charming many of her caregivers.

Jan was deeply loved and will be missed by her daughter, Diane (Pete) Scott of Iowa City, and her son, Mike (Maureen) Kinney of Solon and their families, Josi (Michael) Howes and their son, Eli; Keely Scott and her son, Levi, and Keaton Scott; Jack (Katie) Kinney, and Max Kinney; sister Phyllis (Mike) Ferrel, and sister-in-law, Rose Ann (Ron) Loan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and sister, Marilyn Maher.
