Betty Jean Libby, 100, of Iowa City passed away peacefully on July 21, 2022 at Oaknoll Health Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday August 6, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Oaknoll Foundation, 1 Oaknoll Court, Iowa City, Iowa 52246 (www.oaknoll.com/foundation).

Betty was born on May 28,1922 in Indianola, Iowa to Bert and Emma (Peterson) Sandy. She grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School.

Betty married the love of her life Robert “Bob” Libby on May 26, 1946 in Carlisle, Iowa. In 1947, the couple settled in Iowa City, where they would later raise their two sons and enjoy 65 memorable and adventurous years together before he passed away in 2012.

Aside from raising her children, Betty worked for The University of Iowa College Education before retiring in 1985. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church as well as United Methodist Women and Iowa City Women’s Club. Betty also volunteered at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for many years.

Betty moved to Oaknoll Retirement Residence in 2010, where she lived independently before moving into assisted living at Oaknoll just a few years before her death. She made many friends at Oaknoll and was active in the community there up until her health began to decline.

Betty enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, gardening and was a talented seamstress. Above all other things, Betty’s family was her greatest joy. She devoted her life to her family and they will miss her greatly.

She is survived by her two sons Richard Libby of Clinton, IA, and Stephen (Sharon) Libby of Cedar Rapids, IA; three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Dana and Jo Ann; 7 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren, and several extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson Matthew Libby and two sisters Pauline Felch and Margaret (Marvin) Lewellyn.
