Arla Maxine (Sass) Haught, 94, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Thursday, June 30, 2022, at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Branch, Iowa.

Her family held a private ceremony at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City on Friday, July 8th,
followed by burial at Memory Gardens next to her husband, Lorrin.

Instead of flowers or plants, the family recommends memorials be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice.

Arla was born to Lorenz and Irma (Gegenheimer) Sass on September 13, 1927, in Johnson County, Iowa. Arla and Lorrin Albert Haught were married on September 19, 1948, at the historic Old Brick in Iowa City.

Arla stayed home to raise her children in the early years and her love for her children extended to all the neighborhood children who frequented her home. Arla recalled how the children came through the front door, snacked on cookies, and left through the back door all throughout the day. Arla volunteered as a Boy Scout leader to support the local neighborhood boys, as well as her three young sons. She went on to work for The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for 36 years and enjoyed the company of others in daily conversation and laughter. Arla volunteered for the Loyal Order of the Moose and was always ready for a game of euchre. In the eyes of her children and grandchildren, Arla was known for her genuine nature, ability to laugh easily and a kindness she extended to others.

Arla is survived by her children Russell (Audrey) Haught, Bruce (Dianne) Haught, Dennis (Cindy) Haught and daughter Sheila (Norman) Zeithamel and grandchildren Kerri (Joe) French and Kelli (Thorin Peugh) Haught, Toni (Dave) Wilkie and Neil (Iveree) Hoth, Ryan (Crystal) Haught and Michelle (Skylar) Lind, Caitlin (Patrick) Helbing and Collin Haught, and Jamie Zeithamel. Great grandchildren Lily and Gabe Wilkie, Evan and Lexi Hoth, Charlotte Peugh, and Oakley and Maverick Haught.

Arla was preceded in death by her husband Lorrin and grandson Travis Haught.
