Leo Joseph Sida, 80, of rural Solon, died of cancer Tuesday morning, August 9, 2005, peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 10:30 am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Iowa City. Friends may call Friday, August 12, 2005 from 2 to 8 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City where a parish rosary and vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm. A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn; daughter Beverly Poduska and granddaughter Cheryl Poduska, all of Solon; a nephew Edward Greazel (Pauline) of rural Iowa City; a niece Joan Frees (William) of rural Solon; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Emanuel and Anna (Sedlacek) Sida; his sister Edna (Sida) Greazel; and his son-in-law Daniel Poduska, who died May 23, 2005.

Leo was born October 13, 1924 in Newport Township in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Emanuel and Anna Sedlacek Sida. He married Kathryn L. Parsons on April 15, 1947 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. They enjoyed over 58 wonderful years of married life together.

Leo lived and farmed in Newport Township in Johnson County his entire life. Leo attended and graduated from Newport Township #3 Country School in rural Johnson County. He attended St. Mary’s Church in Newport where he had been a member, and as a young man, received his first communion and confirmation.

Leo was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and was a social member of the Solon American Legion.

Leo had a passion for the land and nature that God gave us. He was a soft spoken and humble individual with a warm smile, a wonderful sense of humor and a calm and caring personality.
