Wayne LeRoy Horak, 90, of Iowa City, died on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30am on Thursday, June 9 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City, with Father Joseph Sia officiating. A time of greeting will be held from 9:30 – 10:30 at the church prior to the mass. Desserts and coffee will be served immediately following the mass in the Fellowship Hall of St. Patrick’s Church. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Riverside, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward Hospice of Washington County, Shelter House, Iowa City, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Wayne was born on March 2, 1932, in Washington, Iowa, the son of John and Anna (Krotz) Horak and grew up in Riverside, Iowa. After completing high school, he enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean war and served aboard the USS Rochester.

On June 6, 1953, Wayne married Liela Knebel on Mare Island Naval Base, Vallejo, CA. He and Liela had two children, David and Dawn. Before retiring in 1994, Wayne worked as a carpenter for more than 20 years. Longtime residents of Riverside, he and his wife moved to Iowa city in 2007. A talented and inventive craftsman, he enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid model railroad enthusiast.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife Liela and their two children, David (Jo) Horak of Brooklyn, NY, Dawn Horak of Peoria, AZ, one granddaughter and two great granddaughters.
He was preceded by his parents, John and Anna Horak, his brother Dale Horak and sister Dolores Grecian.
