Julia Johnson Schaefer, 63, of Iowa City, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County in Iowa City.

Julie was born in north suburban Chicago, IL on March 14, 1959, the daughter of Bennett and Gertrude (Hageman) Johnson. She moved with her family to Iowa in 1968, graduating from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1977. She attended the University of Iowa, receiving a degree in English.

From 2013 to the present, she worked for the Iowa State Public Defenders Office in Iowa City, a job she loved.
The family extends their deepest gratitude and thanks to the Bird House staff and Hospice Compassus for the incredible care they provided Julia in her final days.

Julie is survived by her two daughters, Sarah and Rachel Schaefer; siblings, Susan (Mike) Beller of Colbert, WA, Larry (Brenda) Johnson of Littleton, CO and Jennifer Johnson of Highlands Ranch, CO. She is also survived by four nieces and nephews, numerous extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bennett and Gertrude Johnson of Fort Dodge and nephew Blake Johnson.

A time to celebrate Julie’s life will be held in the next couple weeks. Please check back for the time and place of the celebration. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward the Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County.
