James Neilson Black passed away unexpectedly on May 22, 2022 in Iowa City. He was 33 years old.

James’ family will receive guests at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service (2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City) on Sunday, June 5, from 11-12 pm, concluding with a memorial service at 12 pm celebrating his life.

James was born January 14, 1989 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa; the son of Curtis Black and Kim Black. James was known for his infectious smile, outgoing & spontaneous personality and his energetic nature. He was never afraid of saying what came to mind and was always building something or working on a project. He could fix just about anything that he set his mind to, be it a home repair or just working outside on his vehicles. He enjoyed getting in touch with nature doing activities like camping and attending outdoor events. In his short time he tried his hand at various jobs around town, as well as working for his father’s roofing company. He even tried his hand as a traveling Wind Technician. His kindness and good nature will be missed, but his legacy will be carried on by all who love him.

Surviving James is his beloved wife, Stephanie; children, Alex, Jackson, Alyssa and Henry; siblings, Carissa (Mitch) Engle, Tanisha (Brian) Black, Anthony (Jessi) Black, Mailam Emily Black and Imxuan Vivian Black; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, stepsons and friends. Sadly, James was preceded in death by his parents Curt & Kim Black; grandparents, Henry & Frances Black; William & Betty Forst; numerous Aunts & uncles.
