Charlotte Ann Wilson passed away on February 11, 2022. Charlotte was born and raised in Saugerties, New York near the Catskill, Mountains – the daughter of Anna and Henry York. She studied piano at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. After graduate work at Smith College in Massachusetts she worked as a social worker helping to care for patients with mental illness. She married Bill Wilson in 1950 and they eventually moved to Iowa City which became their life-long home. After Bill died at age 50 in 1975 Charlotte forged a brave new life path for herself.
Charlotte will be remembered in many ways: For the many people she helped at University of Iowa Hospitals as a patient volunteer (their first 1000-hour volunteer) and subsequently as a patient representative for many years, for the many people she gave joy to playing the piano at several local establishments and for her love of all animals; particularly her dogs – Minka, Woolly, Reggie, Scotchie, Alex and Lucky. She established the Lucky Wilson Scholarship at Kirkwood College for students in the Veterinary Assistant/Technician Program. She will also be remembered for the large tins of delectable, exquisitely decorated Christmas cookies she made every holiday season and gave to her family and friends and for her love of books, incredible vocabulary, and skill at the New York Times crossword puzzle. She will especially be remembered for getting up before dawn on below zero days in winter to help her son deliver the Sunday newspaper when he was in grade school.
Charlotte treasured her family and a close-knit circle of good friends. She loved her daughter-in-law, Linda Wilson like her own. She loved, encouraged, and supported her grandchildren Matthew and Erin Wilson in all their academic, musical, and athletic pursuits – and bragged (a bit) about them whenever possible. She was proud of her son Jeffrey – who was usually in her good graces.
Charlotte and her family were appreciative of her many good friends and neighbors - including Jean and Al Hood, Trudi and Jack Rosazza, Frank and Karen Smith, Sarah Maiers, Margaret Hibbs, Oscar Beasley, BJ Wagner, and Dale Eckhardt. She met many kind and caring people at Crestview Nursing Home in West Branch, Iowa.
Out of respect for the ongoing Covid pandemic, there will be no visitation and her burial will be private. For anyone wishing to donate a memorial – an animal charity such as the Johnson County Animal Shelter or similar organization would meet with her approval.
