Carol Marguerite Sokoloff, 79, passed away Friday, January 14th, 2022.
Carol was born in Gary, Indiana in 1942 to Pearl (Rumble) and Mark Mirich. In 1944 the family returned to Mount Vernon, Iowa, and several years later moved to nearby Cedar Rapids, where Carol’s life-long love of art and animals came to the fore.
At Washington High School Carol excelled in her studies, was named a National Merit Scholar, and was invited into the National Honor Society.
Carol enrolled at the University of Iowa in 1961 and majored in Art.
At UI Carol also met her future husband, Michael Sokoloff. They married in 1965 in Cedar Rapids, then moved to New York City, where Carol found work as a switchboard operator at Screen Gems and as a social worker in Harlem.
The couple moved back to Iowa after their daughter Greta was born, and Carol went back to school, earning a Master of Arts in Education at the University of Iowa.
As an educator, Carol devoted her career to preschool students at Eadeschool, teaching decades of Iowa City children in a unique and creative environment.
In the early 1990’s Carol began work at Prairie Lights Bookstore in Iowa City, eventually managing the children’s department until retirement in 2015, continuing her legacy of influencing young minds.
Carol loved to be outdoors, and over the years you may have seen her walking somewhere in Iowa City, often to and from work. She also loved her yearly trips to Moninger Station in Red Lake, Ontario, road trips with her daughter, reminiscing with her husband about their adventures, and playing Scrabble with her sister.
Carol is survived by her husband, Michael Sokoloff and daughter, Greta Sokoloff; her sister, Diane Barrett; her brother-in-law, John Berryhill; nephews: Mark Barrett and Steven Barrett; great niece, Claire Barrett; great nephew, Kellen Barrett and his wife, Kortney Barrett and great nephew, Cameron Barrett.
A memorial service will be held at a future date.
