Daxton Long Hilliker, age 5, passed away December 26, 2021 at UIHC from complications of a sudden asthma attack that he endured days earlier. He spent days courageously fighting for his life with his family at his side while they all prayed for a miracle.

If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever as he was loved by all who knew him but especially his family. Surviving are his devoted parents Dustin Hilliker and Heather Craig, both of Cedar Rapids; grandparents Julie and Richard Burkey, and Betty Hilliker; great grandparents Carol and Jim Holtkamp, and Louise Hilliker; aunts and uncles who absolutely adored him, Dustan Fogle, Travis (Tenia) Fogle, Jamie Fogle, Nghia (Brittney) Hilliker, Nicholas (Joy) Hilliker, Tiona Briene, Hong Nguyen, and Sydney (Cody) Schroeder, and an abundance of cousins, and extended family members.

Daxton was born in Iowa City, Iowa on December 24, 2016 to Dustin Hilliker and Heather Craig and has been their ray of sunshine since the day he was born. Watching him grow the last five years made them feel so proud to be his parents. Daxton was and always will be their favorite Christmas gift. His ability to make others laugh was no teachable skill and was only one of the many things that he was loved for.

Daxton attended and immensely enjoyed school at Trinity Lane Pre-school in Cedar Rapids, where he built strong friendships with the teachers and students, who will miss his love and laughter. He was kind to anyone he encountered and had a giving soul. His smile was contagious and could make any bad day better.

He loved playing outside, especially in the water, eating stretchy popsicles (freeze pops), drinking chocolate milk, watching YouTube and playing video games. He was a fan of Toy Story, Mickey Mouse and ALL superheroes especially Spider-Man, Venom, and Hulk. He also loved music, animals, excavators, and to help cook with his Mama or work on cars with his Dad. Daxton wasn’t camera shy and enjoyed getting his picture taken and saying Cheese! He was so funny always made people smile and laugh.

His aunts, uncles and grandparents loved time spent with Daxton, just as he did and distance never got in the way of the bond they shared.

He touched the lives of so many in his 5 years of life. While the tragic death of Daxton can never be understood or explained, what can be understood is the joy that he brought to the world and memories he left us with that can never be taken away.

Daxton gave us a reason to live, laugh and love and now we will pass on his legacy by living, laughing and loving like Daxton would.
