Darcy Fry, age 60, of Iowa City passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021, at her home after enduring years of health challenges.

Darcy Lynn Grell was born November 4, 1961, in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of William and Mary (Nolte) Grell. She attended Regina Catholic School in Iowa City. Darcy lived her entire life in the Iowa City area. After marrying her first husband, John Hummer, they settled in Oxford, Iowa which is where Darcy eventually learned to cook. It was a running family joke that Darcy couldn't even fry an egg. Darcy was excellent at juggling multiple “mom-duties'' and house work. She had many particular tastes and interests, these included unicorns, Garfield the Cat, the color dark blue, black panthers, Diet Pepsi, tequila sunrises, and her all time favorite which was chocolate! “Darc”, as many referred to her, liked to pass her time watching her beloved crime shows, especially Law & Order(SVU). Most recently, Darcy became a fan of Iowa Hawkeye Football, which was a surprise as sports were never a part of Darcy's vocabulary. Being an in-home health aid was her life’s passion, and she had many entertaining stories to tell as a result. Darcy was a lover of all pets, but a few favorites were Duke, Harley, her two Schnauzers, Coke and Pepsi, and Rusty.

Darcy’s children were very special to her, but everyone knew that her grandchildren were absolutely the most important parts of her life; never letting them leave until they gave her a hug and a kiss. Health issues plagued Darcy for the past few years, making it hard for her to get around. But she never let that stop her from traveling to her daughters houses to watch the grandkids play. You would often hear her panicking when she thought they were being too reckless. In quieter moments she enjoyed coloring with her grandchildren and getting her nails painted by her granddaughter.

Darcy is survived by her children, Mary Jo Hummer-Campbell (Joe), Jessica Ruckebeil (Paul Jr.) and Austin Flanegan; grandchildren, Mason Lavely, Paul Ruckebeil III, Penelope Ruckebeil and Peyton Ruckebeil; Darcy’s mother, Mary Grell; her brother, Danny Grell (Anita); and her second husband, Terry Fry.

Darcy was preceded in death by her father, William Grell; Son, Adam Hummer; sister, Mary Jo Grell; step-father, Dick Grell; and first husband, John Hummer.

There will be a time for family and friends to gather on Monday, December 6, 2021 from 4-6 pm at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Private graveside services will be held at the Oxford Cemetery. To share a thought, memory or condolence, please visit the funeral home website at www.gayandciha.com.
