Charles Peter (“Pete”) Hayek, 77, of Iowa City, died November 21, 2021, in his Iowa City home after an extended battle with cancer arising out of his service in the Vietnam Conflict.
Pete was born in Iowa City on October 26, 1944, to Will Jennings Hayek and Marjorie Bernice (Kurtz) Hayek. He grew up in the family home at 900 N Dubuque Street and attended University High (“U High”) through graduation.
Peter attended and graduated from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, after which he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in March 1967 upon completion of Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. He then completed multiple tours in Vietnam as the Executive Officer of the USS Cree and as the Navigator of the USS Sproston. In all Pete completed a total of 31 years (active and reserve) and retired as an O-6 (Captain) after receiving numerous awards including the Meritorious Service Medal.
After Vietnam, Pete served as an Officer of the Coralville Police Department while he attended the University of Iowa College of Law. Upon his completion of law school in 1973, Pete joined his father, Will, and brother, John, in the practice of law in the Iowa City firm Will founded in 1926. Throughout his civilian career Pete was active in the local community in various roles, but above all enjoyed most his service on the Johnson County Civil Service Commission.
On June 21, 1975, Peter married Julie Ann Benson in Burlington Iowa. Pete and Julie forged a remarkable marriage of over 47 years rooted in large part upon a love and passion for animals – dogs especially – and their two boys, Benjamin (b1977) and David (b1981).
Pete and wife Julie built a cabin in 2000 in northern Minnesota where they retired in 2006 almost immediately after Pete’s cancer diagnosis. They spent most of the seasons in Minnesota with less and less frequent trips back to Iowa City over the years. Pete loved his dogs and enjoyed boating, reading, fishing, and spending time with his Burntside Lake friends and family.
Pete is survived by Julie and their two sons: Benjamin, David (wife Sarah), four grandchildren Anna, Elsie, Will, and Walker.
A private service will be held at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Eastern Iowa Honor Flight or Cedar Valley Humane Society.
