Thelma Larene Meade, age 103, passed away on October 8, 2021 at the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon from COVID-19.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Iowa City with Father Ed Fitzpatrick officiating. Thelma’s family will greet guests from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to St. Anthony’s Bread-St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Mercy Hospital Foundation-Cancer Care Fund, Iowa City.

Thelma was born on October 8, 1918 in Oxford, Iowa to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Taylor. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1937, and continued her education at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where she received her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career instructing in rural one room school houses and concluded her 35 year teaching career later at the Oxford Center.

Thelma was talented in many ways. She played the violin in the Cosgrove Orchestra and taught herself to play the piano and organ. She was an avid baker and crafter, with a number of blue and grand prize ribbons from the Johnson County Fair and Iowa State Fair. She loved to play Euchre with her friends, draw and dreamed of being a writer.

Thelma married Lloyd James in 1940. He passed away in 1951 after serving our Country in WWII. She married Joseph W. Meade in 1974 and they lived happily in rural Johnson County on their acreage. In later years, they enjoyed spending cold Iowa winters in Florida with their many Florida friends.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Dave) and LuAnne (Wayne); grandchildren: Lisa (Roy), Brett (Tina), Brian (Denise), Jennifer (Matt), Amy, Jenna, Kara, and Tyler; great-grandchildren: Brevin, Lynn, Abbie, Avery, MacKenzie, Lilly and Nathan, and great-great grandson, Breckin.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Wilma; her beloved husbands, Lloyd and then Joe and both of her children, Mickey and Cheryl (Jeanie).
