James Powell Hicks, Jr., a 30 year resident of Iowa City, Iowa, transitioned Monday morning, August 16, 2021, following a long illness.
Tony, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on September 30, 1947 to the union of James Powell Hicks and Eula Beatrice Redmond in Lexington, Mississippi. He was raised in Gary, Indiana from the age of one year old and attended Lincoln Elementary, Douglass Elementary and Theodore Roosevelt High Schools, graduating in 1965, before attending Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Retiring as a certified locksmith for the University of Iowa after 22 years, James also collected Black memorabilia and his curated exhibits were displayed over the years at the Herbert Hoover Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa, the University of Iowa, and other venues in the area. James previously owned the 19th century photograph of Frederick Douglass which is currently on display at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
James was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Cozelle Hicks Collyear. He is survived by his wife and partner of 48 years, Bonnie Lee Mahoney; daughter, Mary Ellen Hicks (Alec F. Hickmott) and son, Jason Anthony Hicks of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Bea E. Hicks-Simmons, Iowa City, Iowa; brother Tommy Redmond Hicks (Gayle Huber), LaCanada, California; and many family members and friends.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville, Iowa. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Tony’s favorite charity, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
