Betty Winokur, 93, of Iowa City passed away peacefully July 24, 2021, at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.

Honoring her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded with services to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Hancher Auditorium.

Betty was born October 19, 1927, in Harrisburg, Illinois to Henry and Beulah (Miller) Stricklin. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and continued her education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where she earned her master’s degree in Social Work. While in St. Louis, Betty met and later married Dr. George Winokur on September 12, 1951. The couple spent their early years in St. Louis, where they raised their three children, Thomas, Kenneth, and Patricia, before moving to Iowa City in 1971.

Betty’s career as a social worker began in St. Louis, where she worked for the poverty program and the University City schools, and then for the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, retiring at the age of 65.

Though she lost her husband in 1996, his job as a college professor gave them the opportunity to travel, experiencing many different parts of the world before his death. After losing her husband, she realized living alone was much too boring for someone as social as she was. This is what led her to Oaknoll Retirement Community, where she formed many lifelong friends and enjoyed the many activities that she often took in for the last 20 years.

Betty was an advocate for those less fortunate and was involved in programs to help those in poverty. She was active in the community, was an advocate for Kirkwood Community College and was also a member of the League of Women Voters in Iowa. In her free time, she enjoyed going to Hancher Auditorium. She also was in the New Horizon Band in Iowa City, where she revisited her college marching band role as a clarinetist and, as always, enjoyed the special friends she made in the band.

Her passion and energy will be missed.

Survivors include her daughter Patricia (Thomas Scholz) Winokur of Iowa City, Iowa; two sons Thomas (Mary Ann) Winokur of Birmingham, Alabama, and Kenneth (Jane Gillooly) Winokur of Somerville, Massachusetts, and two grandchildren Ben (Jamie) Winokur of Charlotte, NC and Nick Winokur, of Birmingham, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dr. George Winokur and her brother J.A. Stricklin.
