John G. Schnoebelen, 80, of Iowa City, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 2, 2021 at Mercy Iowa City.

On Tuesday, July 13, a parish rosary will begin at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church. John's family will then greet friends from 10:30 am to 11:30 am - followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:30 am. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to the CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank in Iowa City. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.

Born June 28, 1941 in Iowa City, the son of Walter and Ruth (Thompson) Schnoebelen,
John grew up in rural Iowa City and graduated from Iowa City High School 1959. In 1971, he received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa, majoring in insurance.

He married Kathleen Newkirk on January 25th, 1964 at St. Wenceslaus’s Church in Iowa City. John was active in the US Army Reserves for 14 years.

He worked many years for Owens Brush, and later for City Carton, and started a number of businesses of his own. He kept busy during his retirement by doing maintenance for the Gaffey Apartments.

John was a long-time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and enjoyed raising horses, rabbits and dogs over the years, attending greyhound races, visiting the River City casino, playing cards with friends, doing crosswords and listening to country music. He was proud of his grandchildren, and always offered to help and be a part of their lives as much as possible.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen, son Douglas Schnoebelen of Iowa City, daughter Stephanie Schnoebelen (Lee Brintle) of North Liberty and daughter Valerie Gaul (Alan) of DeBary, Florida; grandchildren, Christopher Gaul, Benjamin Gaul, Amelia Brintle and Marcus Brintle; sister Eileen “Pat” Rogers, of Iowa City, brother W. Grant Schnoebelen of Riverside, Iowa, brother Larry Schnoebelen (Cheryl) of Iowa City, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
