Edward Lee Suiter, 84, of Coralville, Iowa passed away peacefully on June 9, 2021 in the comfort of his home.

To celebrate his life, a gathering for family and friends will be held Saturday June 12, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the mausoleum at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City, where military honors will be performed by the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Born May 4, 1937, in Livonia, Missouri to Howard and Dorothy (Ruggles) Suiter, Ed grew up with five brothers and three sisters. The family later moved to the Oxford area, where he attended school before he began working full-time. He then enlisted in the United States Army in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1958.

After being discharged, Ed moved to San Bernardino, CA, and then Las Vegas, NV. When he moved to Coralville, IA in 1971, he worked as an auto mechanic and was a truck driver. In 1983, he began working in maintenance for the DOT, where he later retired. His work ethic was probably the only thing in his life that he took serious.

Ed loved anything to do with John Wayne and was a gun enthusiast as much as he was a car enthusiast. He enjoyed restoring classic cars and if he wasn’t tinkering in his garage, he more than likely was being ornery somewhere else. He would love more than anything to be remembered for being a prankster and never taking life too seriously as he was always the one that family had to bribe to behave in public, which he rarely did.

Ed’s fun and games were done out of love and if you knew him, you knew to never take offense to anything that would come out of his mouth. He lived to make others laugh, mainly himself. He was well known by many for being ornery but also his ability to see the bright side of any situation no matter the cost of appropriateness.

More than five years ago, Ed’s health declined, and his niece and her husband began caring for him, whether it was making sure he had a flip phone to contact them when needed or even to get him a pack of cigarettes when he called. His niece and her husband, Cindy and Monte Kasper loved their Uncle Ed and feel grateful that they were able to spend the last five years making him comfortable while his health declined. Cindy and Monte’s daughter has many memories of Uncle Ed, all of which include laughing and being ridiculous. More than anything, Cindy and Monte’s grandchildren, Landon and Lenny brought Ed more happiness than they had ever seen. The only time you saw his smile was when the kids would come around, who were like grandchildren to him. He loved Landon and Lenny just as much as they loved him and because of that, we know that Ed died an ornery, but happy man.

He is survived by his siblings Martha (Todd) Baker of St. Cloud, FL, Carrie (Larry) Stratton of Tiffin, IA, Mary Ferguson of Coralville, IA, Bill (Pam) Suiter of Des Moines, IA, and George Suiter of San Diego, CA, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Howard, John and Orville.
