Thomas K. “Tom” Johnson, age 71 of North Liberty died Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Thomas Karl Johnson was born September 12, 1949, in Nyack, NY the son of Harold and Stephanie (Linek) Johnson. The family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa when he was very young where he attended schools graduating from Ottumwa High School in 1967. He later attended Indian Hills Community College receiving his degree in computer networking. Tom served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army. In August of 1976, Tom was united in marriage to Terry L. Rivera in Iowa City. Tom worked for over 32 years for HyVee, many of those years as Produce Manager in stores in Ottumwa, Muscatine and retiring from HyVee at the store in Coralville. After retirement from HyVee, he enjoyed working for over 11 years for Tomlinson-Cannon of Iowa City.

Tom was passionate in his beliefs and purpose; a proud strong supporter of all United States Veterans, volunteer with the North Liberty Fire Department getting his certification as a first responder; an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, enjoyed the outdoors camping, boating, caring for his yard (a bit intense) and his cars. But those lucky enough to know Tom knew his love and loyalty to his family and his friends. He enjoyed people and he never knew a stranger!

His family includes his wife, Terry; daughter, Katrina Johnson; brother, Rick Johnson, sister, Tala Geith; nieces and nephew, Jessica Geith, Jennifer Geith and Eric Johnson; great-nieces and nephews, Elijah, Bryson, Gavin, Destiny, Coen and Collin; and Tom’s sister-in-law, Anna Rivera Wheeler. Tom was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services for family and friends will be held at 2pm Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City concluding with military honors. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Private burial services will be held later.
