Mercella Dorsey was born to the late James & Odessa Dorsey on October 31, 1948 in Chicago, IL. She attended Forrestville Elementary School and DuSable High School. She joined New Nazereth Baptist Church and was baptized at an early age under the leadership of the late Reverend John Hopkins where she served as a choir director, usher and a very good singer and she was also a longtime member of the 1st Corinthians Church, Chicago, IL. Mercella lived in Chicago for 55 years. For 20 of those years she served as an awesome Phlebotmist at the University of Chicago where she was a bright light of hope in the community.

More than this she loved her family and especially her girls Cherise Uvonne & Coran Uvonne. Mom, Cella, Sister Marcy, Merc, Me-Me, Bam-Bam, Ma & Momma were all the names she was known by. Bound by love she decided to pack it all up, leave Chicago and move to wild, wonderful West Virginia to be with her daughter, son-in-love, granddaughter & grandson, she served as a pastoral nurse at Destiny Baptist Church and Kingdom Life Cathedral. Ma Marcy made friends for a lifetime in the Eastern Panhandle. She continued to work as a lab technician in Martinsburg, WV, Winchester and Loudon County Virginia. She learned every twist, turn, bump and curve to perfection making her a city & country momma.

Another adventure was in God’s plan for her life and years later she decided to spread her grandmother cheer and she moved to Iowa City, IA to be a blessing to her daughter Coran affectionately known as CC. In addition to lavishing her grannies Naeema & Armani and most recently she enjoyed her new role as Great G with her great grandson “AJ” -- much love (WLUB-Who Loves You Baby?). In the true spirit of fun & fashion she was a blast as a minion at AJ’s 1st birthday party!

She also adopted several godsons & goddaughters along the way. Me-Me united with The Kingdom Center where she loved her pastors and church family. Ms. Marcy graced the healthcare field again by working with Reach, Optimae, Comfort Care and Home Instead. She never met a stranger and she always kept it real!

She enjoyed her life to the fullest and continued to make accomplishments along the way like going back to school for her degree, learning to swim and going horseback riding. She enjoyed shopping and social-media to the fullest!

She leaves to REJOICE and cherish her life her beloved sister Maxine Dorsey, her children, Cherise & Coran, her grandchildren Naeema, Tiera, Armani (Maraya) & Joshua, her great-grandson “AJ”, niece Tina Renee, nephew Hercules Smith, great nephew DeShun Smith and a host of people whose lives she touched, ministered to and spent quality time with!
