Candie Cool, 52, of Iowa City died February 25, 2021 at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home and following the service at the American Legion, Post 721, 901 2nd St in Coralville. Memorials may be directed to the Cool Family, in care of Victoria Durian.

Candie was born September 22, 1968 in Mount Vernon, Washington, the daughter of Larry and Carolyn Mellecker Cool. She grew up in Washington and California, moving to Iowa when she was ten years old.

She was the oldest of her sisters, Cherie and Beth “Bunny,” whom she cared for while her mother worked and her father was gone.

Candie attended St. James Elementary School and Washington Junior High in Washington, Iowa. She attended high school at Iowa Mennonite School in Kalona, Iowa graduating in 1987. During high school, Candie was active in volleyball, basketball, track and softball. She was also involved in Pep Club, 4-H, FFA Yearbook staff and was a class officer.

After high school, Candie attended William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa and then obtained a business degree and entrepreneurial certificate from the University of Iowa.

Following college, Candie was a nanny on the East and West coasts during the summer. She then moved to Arizona where her son, Brent was born in 1991.

In 1992, Candie moved back to Wellman, Iowa to raise her son and began working for Bray & Klockau law firm. She married Mike Durian in 1999 and their daughter, Victoria, was born later that year.

Together they started a pawn shop in Iowa City and operated a barbeque business with Mike’s brother, Pat. Following her divorce, Candie moved to Casa Grande, Arizona where she worked as a bookkeeper and she also began to take care of her father. In 2008, Candie moved with her father back to Iowa and she began substitute teaching at Mid-Prairie, Iowa City and Lone Tree schools.

In May of 2014, Candie moved to Tiffin, Iowa and began working at Weber Elementary School in Iowa City as a special needs teacher. She then began working for Peterson Iron & Metal in 2015 and in 2016, she began her own Cool Small Business & Consulting.

Candie was proud of all that she accomplished in her life, but she was most proud of her children.

Candie is survived by two children, Victoria Durian of Cedar Rapids and Brent Cool of Coralville; two sisters, Cherie Cool-Rudd (Joe) of Iowa City and Elizabeth Cool of Gila Bend, Arizona; nieces and nephews, Rebecca Lynn Rhodes (Tanner) of Iowa City, Vince Rhodes (Lee) of Washington, Tom Cikos Rhodes (Gabriela) of Florida; and her aunts and uncles, Bob, Bill, and Dennis Mellecker of Oregon, Barbara Kemery of Arizona, Sandy Harris of California, and Mary Muzer of Connecticut.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
