Mary H. (Hill) Boyd-Doehrmann, 94, peacefully passed at her daughter’s home on January 20, 2021, due to complications of COVID-19.

Private family services will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville, Iowa, with a private burial service at Oak Hill Cemetery near Tiffin, Iowa. Mary’s desire was to celebrate her life, not her death, so it was a very difficult decision for the family to plan private services, but in light of the ongoing pandemic and the family’s desire to protect all who loved Mary from potential exposure, the services will be limited to family only. The services may be viewed on Zoom. The Zoom link may be found on Mary’s obituary page under the Tribute Wall at www.lensingfuneral.com. A Facebook page has also been established. To view the Facebook page please search “Mary H. (Hill) Boyd-Doehrmann Celebration of Life Group”. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice (www.iowacityhospice.org) who supported Mary and her family in her final days.

Mary was born on December 11, 1926, in Pollock, Missouri, to Josie G. (Wigfield) Hill and Floyd O. Hill. Her mother referred to her as “the miracle child” as she was born in the midst of the scarlet fever pandemic and it was more luck than science that they both survived. She was raised near Unionville, Missouri and graduated from Unionville High School in 1944. Mary lived in the Coralville/Tiffin area for over 50 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Tiffin.

Mary was very involved with her children and grandchildren. She also loved to dance, play cards and bowl. In fact, in November she bowled 189 in a single game, and she relished showing off that scorecard to her children. She was fun-loving and quick-witted and physically active up to her final illness.

Mary is the mother of five children, including Ron Hackathorn, Kevin Hackathorn and his wife, Patty, Mindy (Boyd) Bowen and her husband, John, Kerry Boyd and his wife, Tina, and Tracy (Boyd) McDowell-Wiskus and her husband, Matt Wiskus. She married Marven Doehrmann on January 18, 2008, in Iowa City, Iowa, and gained a step-son, Gary Doehrmann and his wife, Caroline. Mary and Marv lived at Keystone on Forevergreen Road the last 4 years and had many friends and acquaintances there.

Mary was a cashier at Randall’s in Coralville for 23 years, retiring in 1990. She had many positive experiences during her tenure at Randall’s, including meeting Johnny Cash. Being an avid Hawkeye fan, she considered legendary coaches Lute Olsen and Hayden Fry her friends as they frequented the store regularly. She also loved to watch the Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include her husband and sister, Irene (Toby) Hackathorn. Mary is also survived by her children, grandchildren Bret Hackathon, Brian Hackathorn and his wife, Hannah, Erin Hackathorn, Kelly (Hackathorn) McDonald and her husband, James, Amy Mahoney and her partner, Michael Schmidt, Angela (Mahoney) Ruess and her husband Charlie, Kristi (Boyd) Garland and her husband Kevin, Kelsey (Boyd) Owens and her husband Clayton, Brooke Terwilliger, Matthew McDowell and his wife, Caitlin, Mason McDowell, McKenzie (Wiskus) Wallace and her husband, Ben, Spencer Wiskus, Sierra Doehrmann and Trace Doehrmann. Great-grandchildren Ella Hackathorn, Lars Hackathorn, Alexa Hackathorn, Henry McDonald, McKinley Garland, Eleanor Garland, Olive Owens, Presley Ruess and Palmer Ruess. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Beulah Parrish, Annie Overstreet, Ruth Sullivan and Ethel Cox, and former spouses Joseph Boyd and Andrew Hackathorn.
