Robert Mitchell Andrews died from the Covid-19 virus on January 4, 2021, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City, where he had been a resident since December 2009. Mitchell was born in Iowa City, the eldest of four children born to George G. Andrews and Etta Bickert Andrews.

Mitchell had a long and distinguished career as a piano recitalist, orchestra soloist, accompanying and chamber musician in the U.S. and abroad, and as a teacher. He received his early training at the University of Iowa, continuing his piano studies at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. Mitchell taught piano privately, conducted master classes, and served on the faculties of Juilliard School, Harpur College, and Hunter College. He accompanied many noted performers and participated in a variety of international musical festivals, as well as recorded for a number of record labels.

He joined the music faculty at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, in 1978, serving as chairman of keyboard and performing as part of the American Piano Trio, in residence at the University. He retired in 2000, continuing to teach privately.

He is survived by two brothers, James (Barbara, deceased) Andrews of Iowa City, Arthur (Patricia) Andrews of Tucson, Arizona, a sister Ann Rudi (Norman) of Ames, Iowa, special niece and nephew-in-law Lisa and Mark Strommer of Iowa City, nieces Rebecca Andrews, Stephanie Smith, Michelle Rupiper, and nephews Robert Andrews, Paul Andrews, and Chris Rudi.

Due to Co-Vid concerns a private family service is planned, with burial of the cremains in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of funeral arrangements.
