Charles Edward Hawtrey, died peacefully Tuesday, December 29, 2020 surrounded by family.

Born July 9, 1935, to Rev. William and Ora Hawtrey, Chuck was the eldest of four brothers. A graduate of Grinnell College, Chuck met and married his college sweetheart. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa. During the Vietnam war, Chuck served for two years as a urologist at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. Returning to Iowa City, Chuck became a clinical professor of pediatric urology at the University of Iowa until his retirement in 2002 and professor emeritus until his death. Chuck was recognized as Iowa’s first pediatric urologist and improved the lives of thousands of children. His professional interests included research and writing. He served as secretary and later president of the North Central Section of the American Urological Association where he received the Golden Cane Award for outstanding contributions to the AUA.

A member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 50 years, Chuck served as Eucharistic minister to the homebound and was a faithful participant in the Tuesday morning healing prayer service for over 40 years.

Chuck’s hobbies included cycling, history, genealogy, writing, woodworking, home improvement projects and lively discussions. Reading the New York Times cover to cover was a favorite Sunday pastime. In recent years, he was an active participant in a weightlifting group where the median age was 87.

Chuck was predeceased by his first wife, Betsy two younger brothers, Chris and John, nephew Mark and sister in laws, Mary, Nancy and Margie.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, brother Jim, five children Cathy Riley (Bill), Beth Beasley (John), Martha Cimmarrusti (Tony), Tom Hawtrey (Claire) and Nicole Geske, 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 3 more on the way.

***Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 2, with live streaming available for anyone wishing to attend. Please go to www.trinityic.org and look for the webcast.
