Robert was born on July 4, 1938 in North Liberty, Iowa to Paul and Hazel (Miller) Herring. He grew up with four brothers and seven sisters in the Tiffin/Oxford area. He was a student and an athlete while attending Tiffin High School, where he played baseball and graduated in 1956. He began working at a young age and on September 29, 1961, Bob married the love of his life, Linda Kleinmeyer in Oxford. The couple settled in Oxford before later moving to Tiffin. Bob enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and completed his training at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri but was honorably discharged in 1965 for medical reasons that were out of his control.

Bob and Linda enjoyed 60 loving and memorable years together. While raising their five biological children they made the decision to become foster parents which would change their lives from that point on. The couple began fostering children when they lived in Oxford and continued doing so for nearly five decades. This gave them the opportunity to legally adopt three more children as well as forever embrace a teen foster daughter, Dea, and were now parents to their nine children who they love equally. Bob and his wife had no idea that their home would eventually become a safe haven for over 600 children that were given not only shelter, food and clothing, but most importantly, love. The couple passed on their "foster care trait" to their biological children and grandchildren with four of them adopting kids of their own.

Bob worked as a truck driver for more than 47 years, working for various companies in the area. Most of his career was spent at Iowa City Transfer, where he worked for 24 years. He then was a truck driver for Miller Bros Lumber, The City of Tiffin, and Stutsman’s in Hills, where he retired in 2003. He eventually began working part-time as a custodian for Clear Creek Amana Schools. He also enjoyed being active in the community and was a volunteer for the Tiffin and Oxford Fire Department for more than 40 years combined. Any free time that he had was spent either with his family or giving back to his community, both of which were done with a smile. Bob moved to Anamosa Care Center in 2019 after his health started declining, but not to forget, still as sharp as a tack.

Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Linda Herring of Tiffin, IA; nine children, Julie Mougin of Homestead, IA, Bobby (Misty) Herring of Homestead, IA, Chris Kasper of Tiffin, IA, Lisa Herring of Tiffin, IA, Kim (Steve) Askam of Muscatine, IA, Anthony(Alicia) Herring of North Liberty, IA, Missy Herring of Coralville, IA, Dani Herring of Homestead, IA, and Dea (Jeff) Stratton of Homestead IA; four siblings, Jack (Eileen) Herring of Iowa City, IA, Tim (Diane) Herring of Ainsworth, IA, Gene (Jeannie) Herring of Marion, IA, and Helen (Bruce) Davis of Iowa City, IA, and twenty-seven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Paul and Hazel Herring, seven siblings, Wilma Ferguson, Elsie Martin, Geraldine Gassman, Mary Ann Luedeman, Emily Koenigsacker, Irma Herring and Glen Herring, and three grandchildren, Brittany Herring, Marco Mougin and Noah Herring.
