Carl E. Sweeting, age 92, lifetime resident and area businessman of Iowa City died Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Mercy Hospital.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm, Thursday October 29, 2020, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, where military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the evening. Private Graveside Services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Carl Sweeting Memorial Fund. Carl Elmer Sweeting was born on November 27, 1927, in Tiffin, Iowa the son of Noble J. Sweeting and Lola M. (King) Sweeting. He attended Iowa City Schools graduating with the Class of 1947 from City High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Corps during WWII.
In 1948, he married Maxine M. Koob. The couple made their home in Iowa City raising their family, Carl along with his uncle started Sweeting Flower Shop. He continued this for a number of years before selling his interest to his uncle and joining the United States Postal Service. He worked here for over 28 years before retiring. In retirement he worked for Hanson Auto to keep busy.

Carl enjoyed life in many ways from roller skating the many rinks around eastern Iowa, bowling in many leagues over the years, qualifying for the state tournament for over 20 years in a row, family travels and playing cards with family and friends brought much happiness in Carl’s life.

His family include his children, Tonya Pierce, Christine Roe (Ron), Noble Sweeting (Rochelle), Scott Sweeting (Deb); daughter-in-law, Michelle Sweeting; 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a brother Roger Sweeting (Joyce).

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, Allan; 2 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and 9 siblings.

“Social distancing standards will be in place along with the expectation of all in attendance will be expected to wear a mask. If you arrive without one will be provided to you by the funeral home. Thank you for supporting Carl’s family with your presence and being conscientious in doing so.”
