Edith Katherine Bates was born in White Plains, New York on December 16, 1933. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois graduating from Hyde Park High School in 1952. In the fall of 1952, she moved to Killeen Texas, and on December 19 she married William J. Hargrave (also from Chicago) who was an active duty member of the U.S. Army. As a military family, they raised their children in Texas, Germany, Kentucky, Illinois, and Kansas before settling in Iowa City in 1967.
Edith and Bill raised their children on the east side of Iowa City, where their values of kindness, respect, integrity, and working hard were consistent with those of the neighborhood and community. Edith worked for 34 years at Oral B Laboratories and was a union steward. She retired in 2001. In retirement, she enjoyed time with her children and grandchildren, traveling to Australia, Hawaii, Canadian Rockies, New England, trips and concerts with her daughters—her favorite concert was Tina Turner! She was always proud of her children and relished thematic family reunions – such as the Hargrave Hoe Down that included hay rack rides, boating, square dancing (with a caller), and the family church service. Edith was a loving mother to many “kids” beyond her own 5 children, welcoming her children’s friends into the family. Edith’s warm and infectious smile and laugh was welcoming to all.
For nearly 60 years Edith was an avid league bowler, and she won many individual and team trophies. For 36 years she volunteered with the Johnson County Democratic Party. Her favorite activities included Bible Study Fellowship, Readers Theatre, participating as a juror in the Law School’s mock trials, Questers, the Red Hat Ladies, and events at the Iowa City Senior Center.
Her faith in God grounded her life. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. church, and longtime faith friends of Rev. George and Janice Mullen of the First Assembly of God church. Edith was a woman of faith who showed the love and kindness of God to everyone. Edith was the proud mother of five children- Christine, Carl, Clayton, Craig, and Connie; six grandchildren – Antonio, Chrystal, Alaysha, Autumn, Korene, and Kyle; her grandpup, Cody; and two great-grand children.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents (Lola & Leon Bates), her husband (Bill Hargrave), and her grandson, Antonio.
