Howard J. Morton, age 84 of 708 Rundell Street, Iowa City died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Windmill Manor Care Center in Coralville of pancreatic cancer.

A private family service will be held later. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Howard’s family and his arrangements. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com.

Howard John Morton was born December 9, 1920, in Chicago, IL the son of John and Lydia (Frosch) Morton. Growing up in Chicago, he was a member of the Watson Park Congregational Church, and the Boy Scouts, in which he earned the Eagle Scout rank. Howard graduated from Steinmetz High School in Chicago, and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. On December 23, 1945, he married Laurel Klima.

In WWII, he entered the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Minnesota, and later served with the 44th. Army division in Europe, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Following the war, he became a representative for Chicago Transportation Advertising Company. Here he was responsible for transit advertising with companies in his territory from Minneapolis, MN to El Paso, TX for over fifty-four years.

His family includes his wife, Laurel of Iowa City; son and his wife, Craig and Shirley Morton of Moline, IL; grandson, Tyler Morton and granddaughter, Julie Morton, and several cousins.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Brent and Mark Morton; and several aunts and uncles.
