Mildred (Middy) I. Deegan 104, died peacefully Tuesday, June 1, 2020.

Family committal services are planned for a later date at Oakland Cemetery in Peterson Iowa. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Spencer Children’s Theatre Foundation, or the Spencer Congregational Church.

Middy was born September 20, 1915 in rural Clay County, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Sylvia (Harris) Woolston. She attended Buena Vista College for one Summer School which certified her to teach the next two years in a one room school house. She married Basil Deegan August 25, 1935 and enjoyed 69 years of marriage. A few years later they moved from Peterson to Sulphur Springs, Iowa where Basil owned and managed the Sulphur Springs Grain Elevator until his retirement in 1973.

Middy was a happy organizer and a willing volunteer for whatever was needed to be done in her community, her children’s school, or her church. She was quick witted and loved a good joke. Golf was a favorite activity that she continued into her 90’s. She and Basil loved to travel. They covered the United States as well as Mexico, Western Europe, Russia, South America, and Thailand. Though she was an excellent bridge player, Middy didn’t limit her card playing to bridge. She and Basil were active with several different groups of friends who played a variety of card games.

Following Basil’s retirement, they moved 7 miles down the road to Newell, Iowa. They spent the next 20 years wintering in Bradenton, Florida and summering in Newell. In 1995 they then moved to a condo in the Highlands retirement community located in Spencer, Iowa. Besides playing bridge, Middy really loved the Spencer Community Theatre. In 2017, Middy moved to the Crestview Nursing Home in West Branch, Iowa to be closer to her daughter.

Survivors include two children, Karen “Dee” (Peter) Vanderhoef of Iowa City, and William Michael (Lek) Deegan of Morino Valley, California; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Middy was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband Basil, and daughter Kay Mescher of Iowa City.
