Lila Sanger, may you rest in peace.

March 28, 1925 – March 22, 2020.

Lila passed away after a very brief struggle with pneumonia. Due to the situation we find ourselves in during these times of the Coronavirus, Carol Sanger (Jeremy Waldron) and Michael Sanger (Joanne Lozar Glenn) were unable to travel to Iowa City as Lila entered her final days. She was Nana Lila to Anna (Anahi Parra) and Michael (Hallie Hoffman) and Jack (Vicki), Molly (Adam), and Andrew. And she was thrilled to be a Grand-Nana to Artemio, Ines, and Olive. Holly Sanger and John (Sharkey) of Iowa City will never drive by Oaknoll without thinking of Nana Lila.

There are no immediate plans for a service. Perhaps in the late summer or early fall we will be able to bring her to the United States Military Academy at West Point where she can join Mike (Marshall Sanger) on the hills overlooking the Hudson River.

She would have been 95 on March 28. A life well lived and much enjoyed.

Lila was trained as an Occupational Therapist (NYU), and lived a full life as an Army wife, potter and teacher, Girl Scout leader, and the mom who traveled with three kids all over Europe in a station wagon with a tent. Born and raised in New York City, she lived in Georgia, Virginia, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Belgium, Germany (several times) and Iowa City.

Lila was active politically and if you feel so inspired, donations to any of the following organizations would be appreciated – the ACLU, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the West Point Jewish Chapel Fund, any local food bank, the South District Neighborhood Association (Iowa City) Mural Project GoFundMe, or any organization you believe is doing good work to help others and that stands for kindness.

My brother-in-law, Jeremy Waldron, noted the importance of " ... sharing love and warm wishes in this time of loss ... A time of crisis too, but it is, I think, a good thought that the sad rhythms of ordinary living and ageing and passing still go on in the midst of the pandemic.”
This is the last stanza from the West Point Alma Mater. The link below is a beautiful version of that anthem.

And when our work is done,
Our course on earth is run,
May it be said, 'Well Done;
Be Thou At Peace.'
E'er may that line of gray
Increase from day to day,
Live, serve, and die, we pray,
West Point, for thee.
