Cynthia L. Fairchild, 59, of Iowa City, died Thursday, November 28 at her home surrounded by her family.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Cynthia’s life will be held on December 6 at The Kirkwood Room (515 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City) from 4-7 pm, with a time of sharing at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed toward the Fairchild family in care of Neal Fairchild.

Cynthia was born on October 5, 1960, in Plainfield, New Jersey, daughter of James & Nancy Rae (Dudenhaver) Bailey.
Upon completion of cosmetology school Cynthia began work at Fancy Fingers and Toes Salon in Tucson AZ. Within a year, she went from employee to owner. Shortly thereafter, she purchased the hair salon adjacent to her new nail salon, knocked down the wall between and expanded the services offered. Being the energetic entrepreneur, she was, she looked at expanding further and bettering her business. She took her salon out of the strip mall in which it was located and purchased a free-standing building that would become the home of her new business, Salon De Nouveau. She expanded her practice to include massage, skin care services and a variety of retail items sale. Upon moving to Iowa after and enjoying a brief vacation from the work of business owner, her first job was managing the fine jewelry counter at Younkers. Cynthia soon joined UIHC as an assistant manager over non-clinical staff in the Emergency Department. Following the ED, Cynthia joined the University of Iowa Parking and Transit Department as an assistant manager where she worked for several years. Departing from Parking, Cynthia returned to UIHC Patient Appointment Center as a coordinator for scheduling teams in Ophthalmology, Medicine Specialty, and Dermatology.

Cynthia was always fond of being among friends; be it at book club or spending time with coworkers outside of work hours. She loved the beauty of the great outdoors, from the shores of the ocean to the top of the mountain, Cynthia loved to explore the excitement and surprise the world had to offer. She was fond of travel from a young age, shortly after high school, at the age of 18, she went backpacking across Europe ALONE. Over the course of 3 months, she took small jobs in communities as she traveled when work became available. She picked grapes in France during the harvest season and crops on a family farm in Spain. In addition, as she traveled across the continent, she offered $5.00 haircuts. Cynthia had many other trips to Europe, traveling with both friends and family. Some of her favorite trips were to Baden-Baden, Bavaria, and the Netherlands. A few trips that were very special included New Year’s Eve in London with her son Neal, her sister Julie’s 30th birthday in London and most recently, a grand Hawaiian vacation with her father, her son and his partner, Collin. In recent years, Cynthia became an accomplished silversmith, making beautiful jewelry pieces and continuing her education in the craft with frequent trips to Colorado for classes.

Cynthia is survived by her son, Neal Fairchild (Collin Tagtow) of Iowa City; father, James Bailey of Tucson, AZ; sister, Julie Gardner (Bob Darlington) of Pinetop, AZ; nephew, Ryan Gardner of Lemoore, CA and her fur babies, Quentin and L.B. She was also survived by numerous extended relatives and friends.

She was preceded by her mother Nancy Bailey and her niece, Melissa Gardner.
