Valerie Renee Appleton, 83, of Iowa City, died on Tuesday, October 15 at Emerson Point Assisted Living, surrounded by family.

Valerie’s wishes were to donate her body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program.

Her family will greet friends Tuesday, October 22, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City from 10:00 am to noon. A Celebration of Valerie’s Life will begin at noon at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed toward the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

Shirley Claudette Walden was born in Kansas City, MO on April 26, 1936 to William Walden and Geneva Kathleen (Martin) Walden. She was given up for adoption on May 1, 1936 by Sylvia Parsons.

She travelled with the USO shows (Armed Forces shows of Greater Kansas City, MO.) She entertained for the Army, Navy, and Air Force bases for nearly 4 years. Later, a group from the USO shows broke off and became the group “Sweethearts on Parade”. Shirley joined with them and travelled many places. Following her stint with Sweethearts on Parade, she travelled the midwestern states, entertaining with group from the Tom Drake Theatrical Agency. She went many places on her own throughout her entertaining career singing at many churches and lodges. She was more recently involved with the Iowa City Choraliers and then, The Voices.

On April 6, 1957, she married Richard Charlton George in Kansas City, MO. They had three children: Tish, Michael and Christopher. In September of 1990 they divorced and a month later, she legally changed her name to Valerie Renee Appleton.

Valerie is survived by her two children, Tish Sneed (Bob) of Iowa City and Chris George (Chan) of Des Moines; and her grandchildren, Austin Sneed and Zahk Xalyrion of Iowa City and Cameron George of Des Moines. She is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son Michael George.
