Walter W. “Walt” Prem, 85, went to be with Jesus on Friday, October 4, 2019.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in his memory to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Hour or Orphan Grain Train. Walter William Prem was born January 4, 1934, in Omaha, NE the son of Domenic and Wilhelmina (Hinz) Prem. He was baptized, confirmed and attended school at Cross Lutheran Church in Omaha. He then attended and graduated from South High School with the Class of 1951. He enlisted in the United States Army serving two years active service and another two years in the reserves. On April 13, 1957, Walt married Beverly Bleck at the Golgotha Lutheran Church in Chicago. In Omaha he was active in boy’s baseball, softball, Boy’s Scouts and his church, including many of the youth activities. He attended trade school to become a licensed plumber in both Nebraska and Iowa.

He and his family moved to Iowa City where they were active members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was the “on call plumber” for the church for many years, along with being one of those that when it needed done, Walt was one you could count on! He taught 5th. Grade night classes at the church, along with teaching and being involved in many bible study classes over the years at the church. Walt enjoyed listening to the “Lutheran Hour” on his computer. He so cherished the preschool being at the church, he and George Hertz were the ones that built all the cubby holes for the kids, and anything else that needed done for them. Walt also volunteered at the Iowa City Crisis Center, Emerson Pointe and delivered Meals on Wheels. “A quiet man with a heart of gold and a faith in his Lord!” that he was never bashful to share

His family includes his wife, Beverly; sons, Clyde Prem (Becky) and Andrew Prem (Michele); son-in-law, Jim Tudor; grandsons, Matthew, Daniel, Alex and Ryan; Walt’s sister, Ruth Anderson (Ira) and nieces and nephews.

Walt was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Tudor; brother and his wife, Don and Pat Prem; and his parents.
