Michael Regan Waite, 69, of Iowa City passed away Thursday, September 26, 2019 due to heart failure and complications from diabetes.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where a time of sharing will begin at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Mike was born January 1, 1950 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Richard and Ruth (Blood) Waite and was the oldest of four. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1968. He attended Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Illinois before being stationed on USS Charleston Navy Ship, in Norfolk, VA, where he served as an X-Ray Technician. He earned a Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star before he was honorably discharged in 1972.

Mike later earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Cornell College. Most of his career was spent working for NCS Pearson in the Information Technology Department, retiring in 2011 after 25 years of hard work. While working at Pearson he met his wife, Wendae and they were married on September 8, 1998 in Iowa City.

Mike had a passion for computers and working in his yard. He enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, watching ballroom dancing and eating seafood.

Though Mike kept to himself, he loved spending time with his wife and family. He lived life to the fullest no matter what it threw at him. If you knew Mike, you knew how stubborn he could be especially within the past year dealing with many different health issues which required many doctor and hospital visits. He recently moved to Brown Deer Place and was truly happy there while his health was improving, up until his sudden death.

Mike and his famous grin will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Wendae of Iowa City; his father Richard (Bonnie) Waite; his siblings, Gloria (Henry) Hutto, Marcia (Sonny) Crow and Greg Waite; his mother in law, Carolyn Worley; his sister-in-law, Joyce (Aaron) Liesch; six nieces which he loved like his own, and many cousins and niece and nephew in laws.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth; his father-in-law, James Worley; his niece, Leminda (Mindi) Waite-Bass and both of his grandparents.
