Wendell L. Coulter, 83, formerly of 2312 Wayne Avenue died Monday, April 25, 2005 at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 29, 2005 at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7:30PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 7PM. A luncheon in the church hall will follow the committal In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or St. Mary’s Church.

Wendell was born June 27, 1921 in Montezuma, Iowa, the son of Ward and Gwyrneth “Gwen” (Morton) Coulter. He married Nona Frederick on May 17, 1944 at St. Mary’s Church in Solon. Nona died on January 11, 2004.

Wendell had been employed at the Veterans Administration Medical Center as a purchasing agent for thirty years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose and a life member of the Stinocher American Legion Post #460, Solon. He had served in the US Navy in the Philippines during World War II.

Wendell enjoyed fishing on the Cedar and Iowa Rivers. He loved to grow and care for the roses he grew in his garden. Wendell was a loyal Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan.

Wendell is survived by his children; Tom (Marilyn) Coulter and Connie (Larry) Zahradnek, both of Iowa City and Michael (Ruth) Coulter of Carthage, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Dawn, Kelley, Kimberly, Elizabeth, Wayne, Aaron and Tom; two step grandchildren, Bob and Debbie; three great grandchildren, Sawyer, Reilly, and Brenna and six step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nona and one step-great-granddaughter Cassie.
