Darlene Arndt was born February 20, 1928 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Lillian (White) Wheeler. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1945 and attended Ottumwa Business College earning a degree in office management and applications.

On June 9, 1950 she was united in marriage to Carl Arndt in Ottumwa, Iowa. She retired from the University of Iowa Business Office in 1986. Carl and Darlene enjoyed 20 years of retirement together, traveling and spending winters in Pompano Beach, Florida until Carl’s death in 2006. While in Florida, Darlene was appointed Secretary to the Florida Mobile Homeowners Association, Southern Florida District. She truly enjoyed her later years in Iowa working part-time at the Kalona Chamber of Commerce, enjoying all the events and activities and getting to know great people.

The joys in her life were spending time with her three daughters and their families. She was a member of the Kalona United Methodist Church, Kalona United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star and Kalona Alpha Club. She enjoyed activities with her friends and also loved camping, traveling, reading, playing bridge and boating. If Darlene and her family weren't in the water, they were very near.

Survivors include her daughters, Carla (Mike) Krantz of Coralville, Julie (Kent) Kunze of Waukee, and Sheila (Tracy) Britton of Wellman; six grandchildren, Shawn (Angie Spaulding) Krantz, Jaime (Rob) Maher, Josie (Cameron) Hupp, and Jared, Jacki and Jonah Kunze and four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Carleigh, Mackenzie and Addison Maher. All are very special in her life.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and sisters and brothers-in-law who were equally treasured in her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, Arla Wheeler and two brothers, Francis and Donald “Gail” Wheeler.
