Pauline Roca Pate passed away in peace on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at Care Initiatives Lantern Park in Coralville, Iowa.

Friends may call to honor her life Thursday June 27, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville. A celebration of life will be held at a later date: festive and radiant to reflect her spirit. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood or the UI Department of Neurology.

Born in Quito, Ecuador, she emigrated to the United States upon her marriage to Oscar Pate. They divorced in 1990.

Pauline and Oscar raised five children, Lawrence Pate of Mesquite, Texas, Maria Bozaan (David) of Copenhagen, Denmark and North Liberty, Iowa, David Pate of Las Vegas, Nevada, Rebecca Clark (Kent) of Coralville, Iowa, and Paul Pate (Erin) of Rockford, Michigan.

Pauline took great delight in following the adventures and journeys of her grandchildren, Sarah Bozaan, Dr. Elizabeth Fox (Daniel), Mary Bozaan, Hannah Glochick (Kyle), Aubrey Sarna (Kalyn), Rob Clark (Leigh), Max Clark (Yury), Nathan Pate, Ryan Gleason, Emily Pate, and Julia Pate. She adored her two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Ella Ketelsen.

Pauline was filled with joy at her interactions with others and will be remembered for her zest for life. All whom she encountered were struck by her warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in people. She dedicated her professional life to helping underserved populations, specifically Hispanic immigrants. During her retirement she was an enthusiastic teacher of her native Spanish language. Throughout the many places she lived, she built around herself a community of friends and culture. She sought and found the very best in people.

Buoyed by her Catholic faith, invigorated by the love of her family, and steadied by her fierce sense of independence, she faced a long-term, debilitating illness with courage and grace. Even in her darkest moments, she would still exclaim “that’s wonderful!” when learning of moments of happiness for those around her. While her life on earth has ended, her eternal spirit and perpetual optimism continue to inspire all who knew Pauline.
