Vladimir “Val” Skarda, 94, died Sunday, May 12 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday, May 17 at St. Mary’s Church with Father Steven Witt officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. Mary’s Church or Iowa City Hospice.
Vladimir Frank Skarda was born on December 16, 1924 in Iowa City, the son of Joseph and Anna Brotankova Skarda. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School and attended the University of Iowa.
In 1946, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Vladimir had various sales positions for French’s, General Mills, Nabisco and the Hamm’s Brewing Company.
On February 18, 1954 Vladimir “Val” married Marilyn “Jean” Holub at St. Mary’s Church. They were married for 60 years. Marilyn died in 2014.
Val became the patriarch of the Holub Apartments, an Iowa City landmark, in 1960. He enjoyed watching University of Iowa football and basketball games. He also like to play golf, socialize with friends and attend many dances through the years. Val especially liked to polka. He will be greatly missed.
His family extends their appreciation to the staff at Mercy Hospital and Mercy Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
Survivors include: his son, Gary of Iowa City; granddaughter Victoria of Iowa City and Gary’s special friend, Lucy Sharp of North Liberty.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother, Joseph.
