Betty J. Buchwalter, beloved mother and grandmother, and long-time resident of Coralville and Iowa City, died peacefully on Monday March 21, 2005, in Cedar Falls. She was 79.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday March 28th at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Iowa City with Reverend David Aanonson officiating. Friends and family may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Lensing’s Oak Hill. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 325 Mormon Trek Blvd., Iowa City, IA 52246.

Betty was born September 26, 1925 on a farm near Lone Tree, the daughter of Lee and Inez (Beatty) Hacker. A graduate of City High, she married John Russell in 1949. They divorced in 1976. She married Gerald, "Jerry" Buchwalter in 1981. In 1997, Betty left Iowa City to live closer to her sons.

She worked as a scores clerk at ACT in Iowa City for 15 years before retiring in 1985.
Betty was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and a volunteer for the American Legion Auxiliary, Cub scouts and Boy scouts, PTA and Young Life.

Betty was a woman of faith and compassion, who enjoyed the company of friends and family. She is remembered with gratitude for her infectious laugh, home-cooked meals, and love for others--particularly her sons, her daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her four sons Steven Russell of Eagle River, Alaska, James Russell (Laurie) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, William Russell (Ann) of Atlanta, Georgia and Allan Russell of South Amboy, New Jersey; 10 grandchildren and a sister, Shirley Thompson of Iowa City.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husbands John & Jerry, two brothers, James and Forest “LeRoy” and a sister Roberta Briggs.
