James R. “Jim” Phipps, 73, of Iowa City, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Visitation will be held Saturday, December 15th, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 10:30 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.

Jim was born on February 13, 1945 in Three Rivers, Michigan, the son of William and Marguerite (Mansberger) Phipps. Early in his life, his family moved to Iowa City. Jim graduated from Iowa City High School in 1963.

Jim served in the US Army from 1967 to 1968. He met and later married Marlene Ruhland on March 28, 1974 at St. Patrick’s Church in Iowa City.

Jim was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan, as well as a big Iowa Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed playing in golf leagues during the summers at Hi-Point, and bowling leagues in the winter months.

Jim worked for 42 years for General Pest Control in Iowa City, and particularly enjoyed chatting with his customers, many of which he served for decades. Upon his retirement in 2011, he spent his days doing various gardening projects with his wife, having coffee and lunch at Hy-Vee with friends, and of course more golfing. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, as well as his beloved dog Penny. Making others smile always made Jim smile.

Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marlene; sons Jerry Phipps (Sarah) of Cedar Rapids, Ed Phipps of North Liberty, Mick Phipps and Bob Phipps, both of Coralville;
three grandchildren, Stephanie Phipps, Faith Phipps and Addison Phipps;
a sister, Patricia Burrows (Rayner) of Kalona;
brother in law and sisters in law, Jim and Bev Seamans of Iowa City and Rae Parker of North Liberty and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim’s parents preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Holden Cancer Center at UIHC or the American Diabetes Association.
