Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 PM at First Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, First Christian Church, Coralville Food Pantry or Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
Darrel was born on January 10, 1949 in Oskaloosa, IA, the son of Harold Eugene Courtney and Mildred Alberta Glandon Courtney. He grew up in Fremont, IA, where he graduated from Fremont High School and later went on to graduate from the University of Iowa with a degree in business administration. He married his high school sweetheart Cynthia Louise Brown, whom he met in 5th grade, on September 8, 1968 in Fremont, IA. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.
After graduating from college in 1972, Darrel began his 46 year professional career starting with automotive and insurance sales, leading to a 40 year career as a financial advisor working with companies such as Dain Bosworth, RBC Wealth Management and most recently up and to his passing with Wells Fargo Advisors as First Vice President, Branch Manager.
Darrel kept very active outside of the workplace in his community with organizations such as Jaycees, Eagles Lodge, Elks Lodge (lifetime member), Iowa City/Coralville Chamber of Commerce Board, Harley Owners Group (HOG) Chapter Director and member, Patriot Guard Rider, Coralville Food Pantry Board and First Christian Church. He was an avid lover of little league baseball for his entire life, coaching teams for 20 years, including taking one team to the Babe Ruth World Series in Washington State in 1997.
Darrel also played a large part in local government throughout his life, serving on the Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission, the Iowa City City Council for 2 terms from 1985 to 1993 and serving as Mayor of Iowa City from 1992 to 1993. He oversaw relief efforts for Iowa City during the Great Flood of 1993.
Darrel was a die-hard Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending Football and Men’s and Women’s Basketball games. He also enjoyed spending time on the lake with friends and family on his pontoon. He was an avid motorcycle and Harley enthusiast. There’s no way to even begin to count the number of miles he rode, but always said it was about the journey and not the destination.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia of 50 years and their two sons Brandon (Jennifer Lavigne Courtney, two grandsons Wyatt Courtney and Holden Courtney) of Alpharetta, GA and Nathan (Storm Courtney) of Coralville; step-sister Binky Courtney of Winterset; sister-in-law Myrna Brown of Corning, nieces and nephews and more friends than can be counted.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin sons Jason and Stefan, father and mother in-law Harry and Margaret Brown of Ottumwa, IA, two brother in-laws Charles and Kenneth Brown and one sister in-law Patty Brown.
