Mary Elizabeth Nelson, 80, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Clinton, IA, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2018 at her home. Per her wishes no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Mary was born on February 7, 1938 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Harold and Hazel (Lockett) Shaw. She was united in marriage to Richard Nelson on November 10, 1956 in Clinton, IA. Mary worked at KFC in Clinton for 19 years, retiring in 1998. Mary enjoyed watching the airplanes take off at the Cedar Rapids airport. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard Nelson of Cedar Rapids; four children, Kara Nelson of Cumming, GA, Kathy Hilmo of Asheville, NC, Michael (Jackie) Nelson of Clinton, IA, and Matthew (Karen) Nelson of Walford, IA; five grandchildren, Tye Hilmo, Ross Hilmo, Rachel Nelson, Kayla Nelson and Daniel Nelson; and three siblings, Gary (Kelo) Shaw of Flagstaff, AZ, Richard (Janet) Shaw of Clinton, IA and Carol Lawson of Clinton, IA.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Hazel Shaw; four brothers, two sisters; and one grandchild, Austin.
