Jack W. Dickey, 94, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018, after an extended illness at Legacy Pointe in Iowa City. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 4-7 PM on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. A requiem Eucharist will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Iowa City. Inurnment will follow immediately at the Trinity Episcopal Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Iowa City.

Jack was born on April 30, 1924 in Durant, Oklahoma the son of William Earl and Ardath (Harding) Dickey. He spent his early years in Oklahoma and graduated from Muskogee Central High School in 1942. He briefly attended Muskogee Junior College before entering the United States Navy in 1943 where he was a member of the Seabees before his discharge in 1946. Jack then attended the University of Oklahoma and received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1949 and a master’s degree in education in 1951. After a brief teaching career in Texas and Oklahoma he returned to the University of Oklahoma to pursue a master’s degree in library science. It was there in library school he met Janet Stuart and after their graduation in 1955 they were married and were together for 59 years until her death in 2014. After graduation Jack worked as a librarian in Stillwater and Norman, Oklahoma and Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1961 Jack moved with his family to Iowa City where he worked at the University of Iowa libraries, mostly as the head of the physics and zoology branches, until his retirement in 1986. Jack enjoyed his retirement years traveling and doing volunteer work at Trinity Episcopal Church where he was a longtime member.

People often mentioned Jack’s wit, sense of humor, kindness, and cheerful attitude when describing him. He leaves behind many friends.

Jack is survived by his three sons, James, David and Mark Dickey all of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janet Dickey and son, John.
